Surly International Regional Headquarters has been busy dreaming up a small fleet of exciting new offerings (Moonlanders, anyone?) which we have been thoroughly jazzed about. We recently received nearly a full size run of the Surly Ogre and something about the dropouts looked so familiar...

The resemblance to a chameleon is entirely fitting for a bike so capable of morphing to suit the rider's needs. The Ogre is a 29er based off the tried-and-true geometry of the Karate Monkey but designed to accommodate your choice of drivetrains, brakes, and cargo-carrying methods. Single speed or geared, disc or cantilever brakes, Rohloff hub, trailer, racks, fenders.......

In cycling often times women's specific items are not so hot. The term "shrink it and pink it" is thrown about quite a bit. That is to say that rather than being made for women, it is a slightly smaller and PINK! version of the men's product. Add some floral motifs and you have stuff that is pretty darn unappealing to a lot of us ladies. So, here are a few items for the fairer sex that actually are up to the task.

Women's cycling shorts, knickers, and tights. Padding where it should be for female anatomy, waistbands that don't dig in, ergonomic panel shaping. Prices vary but start about $50. Shorts can be worn all year round under the tights (no padding) or with knee/leg warmers. Knickers are great for 3 seasons, a bit warm in summer.

Spending a lot of time on the bike can sometimes cause chafing. It is one of the less pleasant parts or riding, but it can be avoided. DZ Bliss chamois cream is made for women's skin, no really it is! It protects, and promotes healing in previously damaged skin, as well as strengthening natural biological skin defenses. All of that without the tingling that men's anti-chafe products often have. Is there anything this stuff can't do? Oh, it costs $24, by the way.

Finally, we have some incredible base layers from Modrobes. These are made from Eucalyptex which is pretty impressive stuff. I could go on and on about why it is great but the highlights are that is a natural fiber that dries quickly, is anti-bacterial, supersoft & comfortable, sustainable & biodegradable, and made in Canada. Tights and long sleeve shirts are cozy for the winter. Shorts and short sleeve shirts are great for layering all year round. They are cut for women and come in a pleasing palette of feminine and neutral colors, nothing too girly. The prices start at $30 and go up to about $50 - very reasonable for the quality.

What could be more festive for the holidays than lights, bells and computers?

I dont know, but day 3 of our holiday gift suggestions asks the tough questions.

Winter can be dark and scary, and sometimes the holidays offer us a little light to help get us through till spring. So, here we have a couple of lights that offer safety and convenience.

The Cygolites are USB rechargeable and bright as hell! A little pricier, but money you will save in the long run in replacement batteries alone. Gift guide, installment 2. This time we are talking about some handy items to help you from freezing your whatsits off.

All of the sudden it is getting chilly, well it is December so it should be cold. Here are 3 gift ideas to keep you toasty. All with inexpensive price tags!

First up: Grabber Warmers. These are one-time-use heating packs for your hands or toes. $2 a pair for either extremity. They provide about 6 hours of warming to about 100 degrees. That will help keep you cozy for a nice winter ride!

Next, DZ InHeat Embrocation. Rub this goop on your legs to warm and loosen muscles. It also creates a protective barrier between the cold & wet and your skin. We have low and medium heat, either variety is $20 for 6.7 fl. ozs. Make sure you put it on your legs - not your privates (trust us)!

Last on the list: overshoes and toe covers. Slip these on your feet to keep the wind, rain, or cold out. They come in a bunch of different styles depending on your preferences. Toe covers from around $20 and overshoes starting at about $40. Lots of options from Endura to help keep your feets warm and dry.

Naughty or Nice?

The holidays are rapidly approaching. Christmas is less than 2 weeks away and Hannukah is even sooner. I am sure that Bryan has done no shopping yet, so for folks like him who like to wait for the last minute we will be making some suggestions.

Today I bring you 3 great items for just $10 a piece. These are all perfect for stocking stuffers, little hannukah presents, office gift exchanges, people you don't want to spend a lot of cash on.

Ok, here we go. First awesome item, squeezeee horns. Ten bucks, lots of options, safety first. Look at this little pissed off dinosaur, how could you not love him?

Next, socks. Did I mention hannukah? Socks are pretty much the official gift by about the 4th night. I always think that the more fun the more better when it comes to socks. Donuts, yes please. Gorillas, thank you very much. Orange with stripes, don't mind if I do! The ones pictured are all $10 a pair and we have so many to choose from. Some do cost more, but plenty at this price.

I saved the best for last. These are possibly the best thing ever. Bar-barianz! These are little light up monsters that go on your bars or your valve stem, or anywhere you like. More Cowbell, Please!! (A Cyclocross Primer)

We’re getting to that time of year when it’s definitively cold – there’s no going back now. That doesn’t mean you have to park your bike and go into hibernation.

Before cabin fever sets in, let’s talk cyclocross. Have you heard of it? Picture a short, spectator-friendly bike race set on a course involving some combination of asphalt, gravel, grass, mud, sand, and obstacles. Add cowbells, beer, rowdy fans, and the occasional costume. Hilarity ensues.

Much like the mix of terrain in a ‘cross race, cyclocross bikes draw inspiration from both mountain bikes and road bikes. Mountain bikes contribute knobby tire tread for traction and cantilever or disc brakes for increased stopping in muddy conditions. Road bikes contribute lightweight frames with narrow tires and drop handlebars. The end result is a bicycle suited to riding in, over, and through all kinds of nasty conditions.

So, I'm finally getting motivated for more offroad fun in my life. Been riding a Surly Karate Monkey for 6 years or so, and it has been a great bike for my infrequent adventures into the Forrest. I have decided this is the year I was ready to take the bull by the horns. I knew I was gonna need a squish fork to help my cause as my thumb is still a little sensitive after my incident last december.
Long story short, I have a new mountain bike. And my Monkey is going to a great new home, and will likely get some serious shredding.
Sunday is her maiden voyage, wish me luck!

So, you may recall a mysterious post a little while ago. Phil Wood finally released their Japan Relief Hubs. A set of super sexy track hubs, doing a small part to help those affected by the earthquake, resulting tsunami and meltdown on March 11 2011. The hubs etched with cherry blossoms, a traditional symbol of the beauty and fragility of our own mortality. Keeping our Japanese friends in our hearts and minds while they deal with massive tragedy.

My New Ride: All-City ZONA Nature Boy Prototype!

Now that I am starting to get settled in, and catching up on projects, I had some time this week to work on a little something for myself.

A few months ago I had received a special delivery from my good friends at All-City Cycles. It was a prototype Nature Boy frameset, made with Columbus Zona steel tubing. Something a little lighter and facier than the standard NB frameset that I wiped out on during the Bilenky Junkyard race and broke myself...

I decided to start from scratch with this build and do something a little fancier than with my previous NB build.

I managed to get out for a quick (windy) ride on it today, and did get it good and dirty. More to come about this as I get some more miles on it, but for now enjoy some pics of the fresh build.

One of our customers just got himself a new Royal H, you might have seen it before HERE. When Mark asked me if he could have it shipped to our shop to have it reassembled I was stoked. Just the chance to see it in person and get my hands it was very exciting. And we happen to be about the same size, so I'd have to test ride it right.

So glad we could have even a small part in helping him out with his newest bike, he looks pretty happy to me. We will have to get him out for a nice spring fixed gear ride very soon.

One of the perks of moving and starting off with a clean slate is being able to design the space to better suit our current needs. I originally designed a very compact service area with only 2 repair stands and a single bench and wall of tools, remember I was working alone. Now we have a whopping 4 stands and 3 benches in the main service area!

And now, I have the luxury of being able to set up my own private studio. So when I am working on your new custom wheels or bike I can sit and focus on it while not being in the way of everybody else.

It is starting to feel like home.

So we are almost ready to roll into the new space for good! Another long weekend, and then we move in all of the essentials. Tools, phones, computers...

So this is our last Saturday open in the old shop and boutique. I have very mixed feelings about this of course. I have spent so many hours in that first shop space, many of them it was just me and my dog Buda. The time has come for us to take a big step forward, and the new space is amazing. So I am also very excited to get everything up and running.

Change is inevitable, growth is intentional.

So come bid the old shop and the boutique a fond farewell today. As of Monday We will be closed temporarily while we make the final transition. The plan is to be up and running again in the new space by next weekend. Probably Thursday at the earliest, Saturday at the absolute latest. Check our progress here throughout the week.

Thank you all so much for your support, I can't wait to show you around the new and improved Bicycle Revolutions.

New Shop: More Progress!

I did promise updates, we are making progress I swear. So much to do, so little time...

We had our first official moving day. Our Superstar moving crew consisting of our closest friends/staff got some serious work done yesterday despite the rainy conditions. We moved the complete contents of the boutique basement, most of the shop basement and some of the shop backstock. It was twice as much as I had expected to get done and we did it in half the time. GO TEAM!

Very special recognition goes to the Mini Munchkin Movers, these ladies rock!

Inside, the workbenches are nearly finished. The big bench needs some shelves and a little trim and she is ready to go.

The other bench/shelves under the loft are all done. Ready to install the vise and grinder.

And the paint is mostly done (all of the big stuff anyway)

Jeff from All-City was looking for a TALL rider to test their new LARGE 26" fixed gear frame. And our good friend Drew was just the man for the job. Designed as a trick specific fixed gear frame with a Mid bottom bracket and 14mm rear dropouts, this thing is a monster.

Drew has already been putting it to the test, not sure who is winning yet him or the bike, but it sounds like they are having some fun. This is still a prototype, so look for more news to come at the All-City Blog.

I have been talking about the renovations happening at the new space. Here is our official announcement. The plan is to be up and running by Mid-March in the new space.

New Shop: The Demolition Has Begun!

So we have officially begun renovations on the new shop space! Our friend and contractor extraordinaire John has started tearing apart the space. I am very excited to get this project started and see some progress. Keep posted for photos and updates, things are going to be moving very quickly...

And, don't forget, we are still open at 711 and 712 S. 4th St. for all of your sales, service and accessory needs.

So the first X-Ray is my hand one day after surgery, if you look closely you can see the fracture just below the pins in the image on the right.

This is my hand one day after they removed the pins, about a month after the "incident".

I have some serious work ahead of me to make the thumb and hand strong again.
I can't say enough thanks to my wife for taking care of me and dealing with me through all of this. It sucked, and I don't suffer quietly.
And to the "kids" for holding it down at the shop for me during the numerous absences and handling all the heavy work as I have been shorthanded...

Fortunately, all of the staff has been building themselves mountain bikes. So everybody has been making it into work, more or less on time.

Here we have Maghan and Gary looking handsome with their complimentary bikes.

Adam stopped by to thaw out for a bit while getting around on his cross bike. He will be officially joining the crew after a quick trip to UBI for some learnin'.

Yamaguchi Aero Track Fork

Our good friend Matt recently brought in his Yamaguchi Aero track fork to have some threads added and install it with a Chris King headset.

I don't see much of Yamaguchi's work coming through the shop, and have never seen any of his work raw. The shaped tubing and quality of the brazing are exceptional.

Snow Day, Rest And Recovery.

So it looks like we got a bunch of snow last night. As I am still on the mend, I decided to lay low and enjoy a day snugglin' with the wife and dogs. I hope you all are doing the same.

Since I am only working with one good hand, Heather won the prize today and got to shovel the steps, sidewalk and backyard (for the dogs). She is a trooper!

I made coffee and stayed warm.

Once the yard was passable the dogs were ready to brave the frozen tundra.

The snow was piled up deep in the yard, summertime BBQs frozen till spring!

And Woody's old track bike still slowly rusting away in our dogwood tree.

Tomorrow is another day, shop should be up and running again at 11am.

Still sifting through photos from the Inter-Bike trade show. Here are some lovely new offerings from Brooks that we will be receiving in a few weeks hopefully.

Candy colored Colt saddles, they are also doing an assortment of B-17's in colors this year.

Here are the "Organic Leather" saddles, new vegetable oil treatment for the saddles. They definitely have a unique look, wonder if they will feel any different?

Affinity 212: My "Casual" Road Bike

I have been itching for a new roadbike ever since I saw the Affinity 212 at Interbike last year. My goal was to put something together that was clean and classic yet simple, a go anywhere roadie. I have had some goodies stockpiled away, so while it may seem a bit chaotic, it is all very intentional. Here it is...

Drop Bars, Classic Regal saddle (Ti Rails), MKS pedals/clips/straps (atacs for longer rides)

The drivetrain is where it gets weird (awesome). Suntour XC Expert rear derailleur, 8 speed 11-30 cassette with a Campagnolo Centaur UT compact crankset. A nice versatile widerange double.

And yes, downtube friction shifters! Dia Compe/Rivendell with nice wratcheting action. Got the Velo-Orange Grand Cru sealed bearing chrome headset, very smooth.

Cockpit is Nitto Noodle bar, Cinelli stem and SRAM levers.

The sparkle in the paint is amazing in the sunlight. Nice work on this one Jason.

Looking forward to 70f weather tomorrow and a nice spin, who knows where I will end up, really doesnt matter. See you there.

Ian Au Naturale! (Ian and his Nature Boy you pervs!)

All-City Prototype Track Cranks

Finally getting into my photos from Interbike. Jeffey let me check out these proto-cranks. Looking pretty beefcake! Good to see the kids at All-City moving on some new products, stepping up their game a bit.

Outboard bottom bracket bearings, and meaty oversized spindle.

Some nice machining on the back of those arms to keep them light.

And steel, replaceable pedal inserts.
Can't wait to see some production, get to work Jeff!

New Wheels For My Big Block!

Posted my initial build for this back in August, finally got around to building the proper wheels for it this week. Jeffey from All-City got me some New Sheriff hubs, and I laced em up to the Velo-Orange PBP rims.

I had some fun with the front wheel, lacing it three leading/ three trailing (36h)

And a nice traditional three cross for the rear. Bike is all "finished" now, some fresh New-Xpress tires (700c x 28mm) in the new Green/Skin color.

It has been a few weeks since I have made it down to Water St. Last night was pretty chill, literally in the 60's. Sweathogs were representing, even without the sweat. Everybody was kickin' back and having fun, but Tony was killing it yet again! Drew and Carl were putting it down as well.

Surly Pacer, custom powder coated in Light Pink! We love doing custom and semi-custom Surlys, and this is why. You take something already great and make it AWESOME!

Meghan and Gary's new roommate and fellow Rhode Island defector Hannah needed a new roadie and the Pacer was just what she was looking for. A few minor alterations and wahlah, fancy new "custom" road bike.

Our man Jason hooked up the pink powder. Upgraded to some rugged Conti Ultra Gator Hardshell tires and a Brooks Professional "S" in honey. Topped off with some "natural cork" tape and MKS pedals and clips, VO straps.

Almost looks too good to let this one go! I know I have enough pretty bikes already, but...

Bitchin' NS Analog Cruiser!

So I have yet to post anything about the NS Analog frame that we get into stock a while back. Soap wanted to build his lady friend Summer a new bike after she had a "minor" incident a few weeks ago...

Decided on the Analog frame set to build her a new bad ass coaster brake townie! Also adding to the mix, the Dirty Dog Monkey Skull stem that I have had in my "Candy Case" for years now.

A couple of parts saved from her black and green machine, but mostly starting over from scratch on this one.

And it has full bar spin clearance as well.

Just a reminder that the ever popular fixed gear freestyle frame designs are not limited to the tricksters. They can still be fun versatile city cruisers. Which is really the goal in the first place isn't it?

I think Soap really digs it, I hope Summer does too. Ride safe and don't forget your helmet!

My All-City Big Block

I always try to build up new frames to ride so that I can give real feedback and show some of non-stock options for custom builds. The All-City Big Block was long overdue for some miles.

I got this one built up just in time for the Rocky 8 race and figured it would be a perfect road test for this street machine.

Choosing some new but classically designed components and using some old faithful wheels to get it rolling.

The IRD Defiant crankset is a perfect nod to the Campy Nuovo Record Pista cranks, solid clean and simple at an affordable price ($160). For comfort and convenience I went with the Eastern PC platform pedal with some RE Load Lockdown Jawns. The Thickslick ($30) tire is by Freedom, WTB's new urban brand, which proved to be a great tire for the day. Great traction and super puncture and pinch resistance.

The Selle Italia Turbo saddle ($60) was super comfy and durable despite all of the rain and thrashing throughout the day. The Velo-Orange seatpost looks great and provides a bit more set back to get you over the back wheel a little more for power in the saddle.

Keeping in the theme of shiny new parts I have the Velo-Orange sealed bearing headset, VO 17 degree Stem and Cromo Deda Velocita handlebars.

The bike is a perfect urban fixed gear with enough versatility to keep you rolling through the winter on some cross tires as well as racing all summer at the velodrome.

I am going to be lacing up some new wheels just for this bike as I have already swapped these onto my new All-City Nature Boy. All-City New Sheriff hubs to Velo-Orange PBP rims, all shiny and silver, I will definitely get some more pics up as soon as I get them done, in my spare time...
